Cotton canvas totes can shrink after washing. That’s true, but how much they shrink depends entirely on how they’re made and how you wash them. Untreated, non-pre-shrunk canvas can shrink by around 3–5% after its first wash. If the fabric has been pre-shrunk at the factory (Sanforized), the shrinkage can be kept below 1%. For canvas fabrics, reputable manufacturers typically control the washing shrinkage rate within ±2%.

In other words, do tote bags shrink? The answer isn’t simply “yes” or “no.” It really depends on whether the tote you bought was properly treated before it left the factory.

• Shrinkage above 5%: It’s generally difficult to reverse. At that point, the new dimensions are likely to be the bag’s permanent size.
